HUDSON: On Thursday, July 28, 2022, Gillian Smith announced at the Women of Weld meeting at Ben’s Brick Oven Pizza that she will seek the office of Weld County Council At-Large on the November 2022 ballot.
Per the Weld County website, the functions of the Weld County Council are defined by the Weld County Home Rule Charter. They include setting the salaries of elected county officials, filling any vacancies that occur on the Board of County Commissioners or the Weld County Council, potential suspension of elected officials that are formally charged or indicted for crimes or when a valid petition for recall is presented, reviewing conflicts of interest, and to consider mill levy requests from the Board of County Commissioners.
Ms. Smith brings a variety of skills to the table that would be useful to the County Council. She has been an oil and gas accountant for over twenty-five years. With that comes a deep-seated sense for fiscal responsibility, the ability to work with others to review various situations and analyze the potential financial impacts that may occur. Further, she has worked to create SOX compliance manuals and created multiple cost savings process improvements for various employers.
Currently Ms. Smith is the President of Republican Women of Weld. She also serves on the Weld Area Agency on Aging Board and as President of the Board for Happiness Through Horses which is a non-profit that puts troubled youth and horses together to help each other. One of the reasons Ms. Smith felt compelled to run for Weld County Council is to offer representation of south Weld County where she lives yet she wants to serve Weld County as a whole.
In her free time, Ms. Smith enjoys horseback riding, reading, and doing yoga. If you have questions, please reach her at SmithforWeld@gmail.com or on Facebook at Smith for Weld.
